The increasing number of announcing crimes via the media has led people to argue that this may have bad consequences, such as some individuals getting frightened and others being encouraged to commit crimes. I firmly disagree with this statement for several key reasons: it increases society’s crime awareness in certain regions and attracts the necessary further investigation.
One of the key reasons why media coverage is beneficial for our society is that it increases crime awareness in certain areas. With nowadays social media platforms where lawbreakings get necessary publicity, it usually prevents potential crimes made by the same criminal. For instance, there was a murder of a young woman by her partner in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, and was posted on Instagram page “NeMolchi.kz”. Afterwards, almost everyone from that city knew the murderer’s face, which eliminated the possibility of any girl being killed by him again. In my opinion, it really did expand people’s awareness of such danger existing in that area and the whole attention dedicated to the murderer helped to avoid many potential murders by him. Hence, media announcements play a really significant role and can, in fact, prevent any similar crimes in the future due to individuals’ recognition.
Secondly, such media publications are able to attract needed attention from specific authorities, be it police officers or detectives, which may help to further investigate a case. There are numerous TV shows such as Astarly Aqiqat, Muzhskoye&Zhenskoye, and Pust’ Govoryat that have contributed to the development of so many crime investigations. Specifically, the Pust’ Govoryat Russian channel attracted all needed professionals in order to find the lost baby Matvey Ivanov, who was stolen from a hospital. Eventually, even though the baby was found dead, the TV show itself contributed a lot in finding the criminal and attracting necessary professionals. There were numerous cases in which these TV shows similarly helped to sue an abuser or developed so many cases of domestic violence.
In conclusion, media coverage of crime is one of the key tools in order to avoid such misdemeanours and attract needed attention for further development to reach justice. Therefore I believe these advantages outweigh the potential disadvantages of it.
