Nowadays, more and more people are looking to relocate to developing cities. The reasons for that are clear, as there are more job and leisure opportunities than in small towns. However, the increasing population of cities causes numerous problems, which influence all citizens. In this essay, I am going to discuss pros and cons of living in a large city, and give some conclusions in this regard.
Talking about the advantages of moving to megalopolises, I want to talk about an individual’s prospects. The main reason for moving is usually a job, as in large cities people earn more money and have more job opportunities. Gaining more money, individuals can afford buying housing and spending more money on leisure activities. That is how relocation provides people with a better lifestyle and general life satisfaction. In addition, cities somehow also win from attracting new citizens, as it leads to infrastructure development. For example, new public transport and residential districts are developed because of the increasing population.
On the other hand, the main drawback of the increasing number of people living in large cities is the ecological problems it causes. For example, the rising amount of multi-storey buildings has a detrimental effect on the environment. This is because of the attempts of construction companies to reduce prices per square metre, thus getting rid of all green spaces in these areas. Furthermore, enormous congestion of cities’ centres is also caused by a large number of people, as everyone needs to commit to work.
To sum up, there are numerous advantages and disadvantages for individuals and society of the rapidly growing popularity of big cities. I think that the ecological drawbacks of it are obvious for everyone, however, that is not going to change a lot of people’s minds about moving.
