It is often said that a growing number of people in the urban areas are choosing houses with limited space and no outdoor areas. While this trend is beneficial to some extent, I would argue that it has some drawbacks.
On the one hand, smaller apartments are often more affordable than larger ones. This can make them more accessible to people with lower incomes or those who are on a tight budget. By this method, house’s owners could have more saving budget for other demands such as food or education. Moreover, smaller apartments require less maintenance than larger ones. There is less space to clean, and fewer rooms to furnish and decorate. This can be particularly beneficial for people who are busy or do not enjoy housework and they will allocate more time to other essential activities. For example, they can play more with their children or take care of their parents, which might lead to a closer relationship in their family.
On the other hand, staying in closed apartments for extended periods deprive inhabitants of open air and sunlight, which not only harms their body prowess but also triggers anxiety and other mental issues. People have to work under high pressure in the city, therefore an outside space is an ideal place for them to relax. Many studies have shown that outdoor space, particularly green space, is the best way for people to relieve stress. If they live in a house with little space, they will feel cramped because they are surrounded by four concrete walls, which might lead to major mental problems. Limited space also often has less privacy than larger apartments or houses. This is particularly disadvantageous for families whose members may need separate rooms for privacy or quiet space for work, study, or rest. For example, some children will feel embarrassed when they plan to invite friends over, or they won’t be able to concentrate on studying when they see other people moving back and forth in the house.
In conclusion, while it is irrefutable that living in a small space has enormous advantages, it also brings significant harm. I believe this is causing serious consequences for the quality of life of urban residents and the government needs to find methods to help the inhabitants.
