Positive And Negative

Band 8+: More and more people in the city live in homes with small spaces or no outdoor areas. Do you think it is a negative or positive development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is true that the number of city dwellers who live in homes with limited spaces or outdoor areas is increasing. In my opinion, living in such places has many negative effects.

Firstly, lack of open-air space and small-scale housing may have a negative impact on people’s health. Since citizens in this type of place often have limited access to green space, such as gardens or parks, it seems that they are less likely to engage in physical activities and that they lead a sedentary lifestyle. This unhealthy lifestyle can damage individuals’ health, leading to some health problems, including obesity and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, it is sometimes difficult to ventilate the air in small places with no outdoor area, leading to poor indoor air quality at home. Consequently, residents may suffer from respiratory issues and allergies.

Secondly, this development may also lead to social isolation. Space-restricted dwellings may not accommodate gatherings; therefore, city dwellers may find it difficult to organize social events together, resulting in reduced social interaction among people. The decrease in social interaction often makes individuals feel a sense of isolation and disconnection from the community. Furthermore, inadequate space can strain family relationships as family members have fewer opportunities for personal time and space. For example, in a small apartment with no outdoor area, parents might struggle to find a quiet place to work or relax while their children struggle to find a place for their hobbies, which might lead to increased tension among family members.

In conclusion, more and more people living in homes with small places or no outdoor area can be considered a negative development because this may negatively affect people’s health and relationships.
