In recent years, it has become increasingly common for people to visit famous tourist attractions mainly to take photographs of themselves rather than to appreciate the place itself. This trend is largely driven by social media influence, and in my opinion, it is mostly a negative development.
One of the main reasons for this behaviour is the rise of social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat. Many individuals feel pressured to present a glamorous lifestyle online, and visiting popular locations provides an opportunity to capture eye-catching photos. As a result, the experience becomes more about gaining likes and validation than about enjoying the cultural or historical significance of the place. In addition, smartphones have made photography extremely easy and accessible, encouraging people to constantly document their lives instead of living in the moment.
Another contributing factor is the desire for social recognition. People often compare themselves with others online, which pushes them to visit trending destinations just to keep up. For example, a person may travel to a famous landmark not because of genuine interest, but simply because it is popular on social media. This shifts the focus from meaningful travel experiences to superficial image-building.
In my view, this is largely a negative trend. Firstly, it reduces the value of travel, as people fail to truly engage with the environment, history, or culture of the places they visit. Secondly, it can lead to overcrowding in certain locations, as people flock to “photo-worthy” spots rather than exploring less-known but equally important areas. Finally, it may negatively affect mental health, as individuals become overly concerned with online approval.
In conclusion, while taking photos is a normal part of travel, the growing obsession with capturing the perfect image for social media is driven by external validation and peer pressure. This development is more harmful than beneficial, as it diminishes authentic experiences and promotes shallow engagement with the world.
