Aging is defined as a natural process occurring as one grows older. Achieving a timeless beauty, therefore, is often associated with people’s splashing out on anti-aging products and services. From my perspective, this trend can be attributed to the unrealistic beauty standards emerging on social media, which may eventually prove to be a detrimental development.
Granted, social media has been the main contributory factor leading to people’s desire to have a younger appearance. With the prevalence of social platforms prompted by technological advancements, internet users get greater access to social accounts of celebrities whose complexions are always youthful regardless of their ages. The admiration for their beauty may gradually transform into a wish for emulation, unintentionally creating a mental beauty stereotype. As a result, people tend to look for suggested tips which involve exorbitant spending on skincare and cosmetic products as well as spa services and plastic surgeries. The tendency is further reinforced with the intervention of related companies, aiming at attracting potential customers through collaboration with famous people. Advertising contents, as such, usually manifest in forms of youthful populace’s sharing, hence gaining more attention from the viewers.
This trend, however, can be detrimental to the adopters’ skin condition if not the overall health. Indeed, in such an economy-driven society, some cosmetics producers can be overwhelmed by the profits, implementing any strategies to cut down production costs and boost sales at the expense of customers’ trust. This later culminates in exaggerating commercials which allure watchers into buying low-quality products. As one applies the products to their complexion, allergic symptoms potentially occur, rendering many skin diseases which are often costly to receive treatment. On top of that, as a more extreme method popularized among those who want timeless beauty, plastic surgery is often intertwined with high risks of health problems afterwards. More severe consequences can involve damaged original face or even mortality due to unbearable health conditions. For instance, in the morbidity and mortality weekly report, a total of 93 cosmetic surgeries–related deaths of U.S. citizens in the Dominican Republic occurred during 2009–2022, indicating an alarm for those wishing to look younger.
In conclusion, the admiration for celebrities’ youthful appearance, coupled with the assistance of related companies has given rise to this trend. I personally believe this is a negative development when considering the likely exacerbated health conditions of adopters.
