There is no doubt that transport is an essential aspect of modern life, and use of private transport is significantly increasing among people, particularly cars. There appear to be two main reasons contributing to this trend, as well as several possible solutions by higher authorities, which I will discuss now.
Perhaps the major cause stemming from this trend is the bad infrastructure of public transport ranging from buses to trains. We see this in most cities such as London and Tokyo, people who take local transit are often got late for their work because of inadequate transportation facilities. Another well-known reason would be the better affordability of cars. Although personal vehicles are highly affordable and convenient rather than public ones, or save commuting time, it will create the problem of traffic congestion on roads, thus pollution is inevitable. Finally, if a significant number of people used cars, it might increase various issues in the form of overcrowding.
Turning to possible solutions, the main remedy may be to encourage investment in infrastructure. This means that the government should take initiative to provide subsidies, or enhance public-private partnership, leading to increased better transportation facilities. Furthermore, another considerable solution can be to enhance tax rates on private motor vehicles. For example, if the executive imposes higher taxes on such vehicles, or reduce ticket prices for public vehicles, it will help to control the usage of private vehicles and increase public transportation facilities. Lastly, authorities can promote telecommuting, leading to less need of cars on roads, thus reducing traffic.
Overall, it seems that the outdated infrastructure and convenience are the two aspects of this trend, and viable solutions which involve promoting remote work and funding for better infrastructure would help to reduce the burden.
