Many species today are becoming extinct because of humans. In my opinion, this is because wild areas are being destroyed due to illegal logging and the pollution of waterways by industrial waste, but the situation can be improved with stronger regulations and stricter enforcement.
A major factor which causes extinction is illegal logging because the wild animals have less space and food available. Illegal loggers cut down the trees in national parks because they are valuable for building or making furniture. The orangutan, found in Indonesia and Malaysia, is a good example of an animal that is endangered due to this. As the forest becomes smaller, there is less food and space for orangutans. A good solution is for the government to fund special police or rangers to protect national parks. These rangers could stop people and companies destroying the forest and people who are caught can be fined and this money could be used to pay for the protection of the forest.
A second cause is industrial pollution in rivers because it can poison the water and lead to the death of wildlife. An example of this is the Citarum river in Indonesia. Factories next to this river pump waste chemicals directly into the water, which has resulted in over 95% of the fish dying. A solution for this is that waste should be treated in order to clean it before it is sent to the river, and the government should monitor waste and prosecute businesses which do not follow environmental laws. Once again, the key to improving the situation is monitoring and harsher penalties for those who break the law.
In conclusion, two major threats to wildlife are habitat destruction due to illegal logging and the pollution of rivers by industry. Both of these problems can be solved if the government is willing to spend the money and hunt down those breaking the law.
