It is becoming common for employees to work in one big office room together instead of working separately. While this offers some benefits, there are drawbacks as well. I personally believe the merits of working in open-space offices outweigh any negatives.
One of the biggest downsides of working in a defoliated area is the lack of privacy. When there is no enclosed space, employees may interrupt each other. For example, while one is doing his or her work, others might come and ask work-related or out-of-business questions which in turn leads to a loss of concentration or ineffective work process. Additionally, working in a noisy environment may cause people to be burned out. This will happen especially in phone answering services. In such offices, many people are suffering from a high level of noise and constant stress.
On the other hand, there are too many positives working in offices which are utilized to work with people around. Firstly, this can increase collaboration. Workers will be able to communicate or interact with each other at any time of day. This may increase their mood and facilitate their work especially when they get bored. What is more, the layouts allow for flexible use of space. For example, employees have a chance to meet their needs faster than working in separate rooms. This is because, nowadays all necessary staff for employment are conveniently located. In turn, they can save time and focus on their projects.
In conclusion, while lack of privacy and increase in stress are the negatives of working in an open space, positives such as collaboration and flexibility far outweigh any drawbacks.
