It is true that culture of immediacy has become more prevalent than ever before with the advancement of technology and increasing globalization. Although this trend made people more efficient and productive, I consider it a largely negative development because of the challenges it brings.
With the rapid advancement of technology and the growing influence of social media that globalization hasfacilitated, nearly everyone now spends much of their time scrolling through digital platforms, leading to a reduced attention span. These platforms also allow instant access to all kinds of information. Under such circumstances, it is unsurprising that many individuals have lost valuable qualities such as patience and inner calm and have developed a constant need for immediate gratification.
Another reason behind this trend is the intense competition among businesses that aim to provide faster services and information. The growing demand from business owners often push employees to work under pressure, prioritizing speed over quality. Gone are the days when people were willing to wait patiently for services to be completed; the focus has shifted to instant results. For example, ordering fast food has become more convenient than ever due to the proliferation of delivery apps that allow people to satisfy their needs instantly.
However, I believe this phenomenon has a negative impact overall because it contributes to the depletion of natural resources and environmental degradation. Oil and gas, for instance, power the vehicles that enable rapid delivery and constant commuting, both of which worsen air quality. In addition, consumeristic nature of modern society leads to overproduction and waste, as a significant proportion of purchased goods – especially food and clothing – are discarded. Incinerating this waste, combined with emissions from daily traffic releases harmful pollutants that cause respiratory and cardiovascular diseases by damaging vital organs such as the lungs, brain, and heart.
In conclusion, the rise of immediacy stems mainly from the influence of social media and intense business competition. Nonetheless, the environmental damage and strain on natural resources that accompany it make this a predominantly negative development.
