Band 6+: Nowadays people around the world are choosing to self-medicate rather than seeing a doctor and using conventional medicine. What are the causes of this change and what effects can be seen as a result?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, an increasing number of people in this world want to solve the problem about their health on their own, instead of visiting a doctor practitioner and having conventional medicine. In my opinion, this trend can have many causes behind it , but it also brings about certain consequences that need to be carefully considered.

One of the main causes why people choose to self-medicate is cultural beliefs and traditions. In other words, in many cultures, traditional medicine and home treatments are deeply ingrained. People may prefer using herbal or natural remedies, which they believe are safer than pharmaceutical drugs. For example, in many countryside of India, people often turn to Ayurvedic medicine for treating common illnesses like colds, indigestions, or headaches. They believe that traditional herbal remedies are more natural and effective than pharmaceutical drugs.

Privacy concerns also play a significant role in the rise of self-medication. Some people may feel embarrassed or ashamed to visit a doctor for certain medical issues, particularly for personal or sensitive health concerns. For instance, a young person suffering from a skin rash might feel uncomfortable discussing the condition with a healthcare provider and instead purchase an over-the-counter cream based on online advice. This can lead to unsuitable treatments, which may worsen the problems.

The result of considering self-medication is the potential for misdiagnosis. Without proper medica; training, individual may misunderstanding their symptoms, leading to incorrect treatments that could worsen their condition. For example, using antibiotics for viral infections not only fails to treat the illness but also contributes to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a growing global health problem. Another consequence is the risk of drug interactions and side effects. People who self-medication often lack of understanding of how different drugs interact with each other or with pre-existing condition. This can lead to serious health problems, such as allergic reactions, overdoses, or complications long-lasting illnesses.
