Positive And Negative

Band 6+: Nowadays, some parents put a lot of pressure on their children. Why do parents do this? Is this a positive or negative development for the children?

In modern days some parents set high bars and have great expectations for their offspring. In my opinion this is because of the desire for their children to be successful, disciplined, ambitious, determined individuals with a bright future ahead. However, I think this is a negative trend since by following the pressuring approach parents sometimes try to fulfill personal unreached goals through their children and moreover that might contribute to the child’s mental condition.

Firstly, the reason parents are strict with their children is discipline that leads to success and furthermore to achieving goals and having a prosperous life. In other words, every parent’s intention is to witness their offspring happily settling in life. It is said that behind every remarkable individual there is a demanding parental figure that sets the most ambitious goal. For instance, world famous tennis player Serena Williams would have not achieved all the fame and glory if it had not been for her father, who is well known for being a very demanding parent. Secondly, by putting pressure on younglings parents simply aim to cultivate important personality traits such as self-discipline, determination and ambition to show the best results.

However, a parent with a severe model of upbringing can cause some disadvantages to a child. One serious issue that might arise from putting a lot of pressure on children is their psychological well-being. Some kids can be particularly vulnerable towards pressure and criticism especially if they receive it from a primary caretaker. This could lead to overachiever and imposter syndromes and have a negative affect on their self esteem. Another problem is that parents often get blindfolded by their desires of what they think children should do instead of concentrating on figuring out what is beneficial for them. And the reason is that some parents wish their kids would accomplish things that they never were capable of.

In conclusion, although a tough parenting approach clearly has some reasoning points, it brings several negative sides that are more likely to outweigh the advantages of it.
