Many devices we use actually monitor what we do on a daily basis, like phones tracking where we go and security cameras catching everything we do. Most of the time, people don’t even realize that they are monitored and just continue to live their ordinary lives while devices watch them anywhere they go. I believe this technology is useful to an extent as long as it doesn’t violate anyone’s personal space.
First of all, monitoring with security cameras and other technological devices that are used for the safety of an establishment is totally justified. For instance, a workplace will function far better if the owner knows what’s going on inside their place, and this can’t be done just by some security guards. Many burglars nowadays started to get better at their work because they need to overcome many technological devices; for that reason, it is really difficult for men to guard the place without the help of security cameras. One thing that should be considered is to place these cameras without violating anyone. To illustrate, putting cameras in common toilets and the hotel rooms has to be out of the question. Other than that, usage of security cameras is totally understandable, and people shouldn’t be opposed to it.
On the other hand, monitoring people via cellphones or other personal devices is definitely unethical. There are some smart devices that use the phone’s camera to monitor without the user noticing, therefore breaching into their personal space, and the companies do not just settle with that either; they also listen to them and track where they are going all the time. How those corporations justify this is way more ridiculus. They simply say that these informations are essential for better service to the people using their devices because the device changes the algorithm every now and then to show specific things related to what happened in users real life. For example, if the person went abroad to Rome, it shows more ads concerning Rome, like accommodation possibilities or available travel guides, and this is evidence of how less of a private life people actually live. There is a need for a policy reducing this monitoring happening on people’s personal devices so that people can keep their lives to themselves.
In conclusion, the monitoring can be both essential and invasive. The usage of security cameras is perfectly reasonable unless they are installed in private places. Regardless of this, personal devices watching, listening, and tracking where we go should be forbidden in view of the fact that it invades one’s personal space. So it is crucial for the people to understand the difference between these monitorings, and there should be some kind of policy to protect everyone’s privacy.
