In the past decades, the proliferation of surveillance technology has transformed in many aspects of lives, from monitor people activities to track people’s locations. Although, people being recorded without knowledge raise a legitimate concern about privacy infringement, I firmly believe that such innovations will contribute significantly to crime reduction through enhanced prevention and detection capability, while implemented under transparency and strict regulation.
The implementation of surveillance technology without notifying can place people’s privacy at risks. The evolution of cybercrime means that offenders can exploit technological vulnerabilities to commit sophisticated offenses. Cybercriminals can exploit vulnerabilities in technology to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information such as biometric data or financial password. Once those crimes were committed, they can potentially affect victims’ life both personally and professionally. For example, scammers may obtain through data breachers or illicit data markets. They can then exploit this information to impersonate legitimate organizations and deceive victims. Despite these risks, the advantage of these technological advancement far outweigh the disadvantages.
In contrast, the benefit of surveillance technology in crime prevention and investigation are more compelling. Many surveillance systems were installed in public spaces, which can deter potential offenders from committing crimes. For example, installation of CCTV cameras in public spaces may deter vandalism and robbery, as a result crime rates were decreased.
Additionally, these footages from CCTV cameras can be key evidences for tracing and identifying suspects, beneficial for the police to anticipate and apprehend suspects more swiftly. While these benefits are clear, ethnical concerns must be addressed to ensure public trust.
To conclude, while acknowledge the challenge posed by cybercriminal, I believe that the innovation of these technologies will play a crucial role in developing public safety and reducing crime rates. Government and organization should deploy surveillance technology while prioritize ethnical guidelines and proper regulation ensuring the public security.
