These days, we are exposed to large amounts of ads placed outdoors and in TV programs. In my opinion, disadvantages of the growing tendency of seeing advertisements everywhere are more significant than the potential benefits.
One of the main positives of rising number of commercials is the fact that customers get to know about the options available in market for the item that they are searching for. This can substantially shorten the decision-making process of the client and save time. For example, if a person wants to buy a smartphone, he/she doesn’t have to visit each store, ask for technical specifications and compare with other models available nowadays, instead, companies will try to deliver you the information you need via advertisements in a short amount of time. Another benefit worth to consider is that customers become aware of the possible discounts and special offers through commercials. This way, shoppers can purchase products or services for a lower price, resulting in saving money and contributing to the family budget.
Despite the upsides discussed above, I would contend that downsides are much greater. One obvious disadvantage is that advertisements fuel the increasing tendency of consumerism in society. Commercials are being produced in a way to persuade people buy items or services they don’t even need. Secondly, regarding the fact that there is no strict control on ads in most countries, young-age groups can easily be affected. For instance, betting commercials might pave a way for addiction in teenagers that might not be easily fixed in future. Last but not least, growth in number of ads can irritate TV viewers and city dwellers, thus leading to general distrust in society towards advertisements.
To sum up, although there are positive effects of having increased number of advertisements on TV and streets, the negative ones are appear to be more significant.
