In recent times, many young people look up to celebrities from the media and sports world, even when these figures do not always behave responsibly. In my opinion, it is a negative development because it results in unrealistic expectations, poor role model and risky behavior.
To begin with, it is a common practice on the media with these popular personalities and sports stars displaying their show of wealth and fame. These can lead to unrealistic expectations and as such the youngsters may try to imitate their fame, appearance or affluence, which may bring about low self esteem or disappointment especially when these young individuals are from low income families and they cannot at such lifestyle. For example, a youth who has a poor family background trying to depict and copy the lifestyle of these celebrities may not be able to afford such lifestyle and as such result into faking it which can bring about low self esteem due to unrealistic expectations.
Furthermore, another reason why I say these is a negative development is the fact that it can bring about risky behavior and poor role model. Some of these famous figures and sports stars that these young individuals look up to as their role model promote unhealthy behavior such as engaging in drug use, smoking, alcohol use for these reasons some youth may copy these dangerous actions they see online or in the sport world believing it will make them cool and be like their role models. For instance, the high use of drugs and alcohol abuse by youth is as a result of mimicking their favorite famous figures and athletes.
In conclusion, nowadays youths are adapting the lifestyle and behavior of their favorite celebrities in the media and sports athletes even though they portray bad examples. However, it is a negative development because it exposes the young people to unrealistic expectations such as low self esteem, it will also make the youth engage in risky behaviors such as the use of illegal drugs, smoking and alcohol abuse.
