Since children begin enrolling in formal education, it is commonly believed that teachers exert a greater influence on their intellectual and social development than their parents do. From my perspective, I totally agree with this stance.
Admittedly, the intellectual development of children can be greatly enhanced by the specialized knowledge and skills of teachers. Educators are trained in various pedagogical methods, enabling them to effectively stimulate a child’s intellectual curiosity and foster critical thinking abilities. Parents, despite their best intentions, often lack the specialized training, making them struggle to provide the same level of intellectual stimulation as professional teachers. Moreover, as children progress through different levels of education, the complexity of their academic pursuits becomes greater, thereby making it hard for parents to provide meaningful academic assistance. Howver, teachers are trained professionals who are well-equipped to handle such intricacies and guide students accordingly.
In terms of social development, teachers play a pivotal role in shaping children’s interpersonal skills. Since schools can offer a unique setting for student-student and teacher-student interactions, this allows young people to learn essential life skills such as conflict resolution or cooperation. Furthermore, teachers are experienced mentors who guide students through these interactions and help them navigate the complexities of social relationships, while parents are not able to provide the same diversity of social experiences and exposure to varied perspectives that children can encounter at school. Consequently, this reflects that both the school environment and teachers’ guidance are the crucial factors in fostering children’s social competence.
In conclusion, I am firmly convinced that teachers have a greater influence than parents on both children’s intellectual and social development.
