In contemporary society, there is a growing discourse surrounding the fact that the world is witnessing the downfall trend of food. To cope with this circumstance, a feasible solution that a group of individuals proposes is genetically modifying foods. While I accept this proposal can provide several beneficial impacts to society, I contend the drawbacks of this argument may outweigh the advantages.
On one side of the argument, initially investing in GM food can increase agricultural productivity effectively due to its rapid growth since food having altered genes can straightforwardly grow more than other types of food, therefore creating a tremendous yield to meet the needs of consumers in a short time. Additionally, generating foods that reproduce one’s cells can help them have the capability to be resistant to harsh environments and common pets, leading to a reduction in the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers increasing the longevity of food. As a result, this type of sustainable food can cut down on growing costs which is suitable for farmers to grow since it not only brings benefits to them by helping them save time, effort, and money but also gives opportunities to the agricultural sector to break the boundaries and achieve a breakthrough in the food production industry.
Conversely, people need to revisit a concern about the precipitating use of GM foods in modern society because of the potential detrimental effects it can bring. Overusing these foods to increase productivity and profitable benefits can negatively affect the ecosystem. For instance, many species such as Stem borers, yellow worms, and leaf rollers… to name but a few can be easily eliminated by the presence of numerous resistance foods since these pest species have difficulties absorbing, making the nutrient sources of them become depleted. Consequently, this can lead to the extinction of several kinds, disrupting ecosystem balance. Nevertheless, growing too fast and easily can invade other species of food becoming an invasive species and leading to unhealthy farming practices that make farmers experience a loss of income from other types of foods.
In conclusion, while I acknowledge the merits of genetically modified foods for agricultural advancement and consumerism, I assert that these types of food can have adverse impacts on the ecosystem and economy. To reduce these negative effects, the government to impose new policies about this new type of food and the need for the farmers’ consciousness of overusing them to achieve the best outcome.
