Nowadays a lot of controversy has been occurring around the topic of whether parents should take responsibility for their children’s actions or not. People have different opinions on this issue, but I believe one needs to be aware of the situation to determine whether parents should be involved at all.
I would like to begin by saying, the most important aspect that needs to be taken into consideration is the child’s age. According to the Mongolian law, if a minor from the age of 16 commits a crime, it will be subject to criminal liability, as this is the age where you receive your official documents from the country. I agree with this statement, as I believe that 16 years of age is old enough to be able to determine what is wrong and what is right, as well as the severity of certain actions. At this point, I do not agree that parents should be the ones punished for their offspring’s crimes. In contrast, if the offender is, for example, 14 or younger, one could argue that this person does not understand the dept of their actions and parents should be responsible for them for possibly not educating their child correctly or being a negative influence to them, as they are the ones closest to these children and the first people the young learn from.
Further more, the next aspect that should be noted is the severity of the crime. On the one hand, If a young individual commits a light offense, such as stealing from a convenience store, I believe it could be brought down to how they were raised and what they were taught by their parents, making it the adults fault. On the other hand, if the child inflicts serious harm to another person, whether it be mentally or physically, I do not believe it can be justified by poor parenting, as it has everything to do with the way of ones mindset, values and views. I believe the blame of someone who is capable of committing such acts should not be shifted on another person, in this case their parents, regardless of their age or gender.
Overall, although I agree that parents are responsible for their children, not every action depends on them nor can be controlled. Every situation is different and the one to take the blame varies from the backstory of what had happened. Regardless, parents should always pay extra attention to their kids behaviors and correct them if needed to prevent unfortunate situations from happening in the future.
