In today’s developed world, with the rapid advancement of many aspects of human life such as technology, health care and education, the standard of living for residents worldwide tends to improve significantly. Therefore, some believe that residents in the 21st century have a better and happier life than their ancestors. While I strongly agree that nowadays individuals are fulfilling and enjoying their lives by accessing the higher quality healthcare system and technologies, I also think that busy schedules or working under high pressures have significantly decreased the quality of their health, especially mental health.
On the one hand, with the continuous development of the healthcare system, more and more citizens can decrease the risk of health issues like cancers or diabetes. Although serious illnesses have greatly affected people’s quality of life and their overall life expectancy, many people are more likely to avoid them early through regular checks at hospitals and overcome these issues completely by using high-quality medicine or medical methods. Additionally, technologies and artificial intelligence also play an essential role in today’s life. With the help of robots or applications, people can work and study more easily, leading to the sense of relaxation and fulfillment, which is so important for the improvement of life standards.
On the other hand, nowadays many people suffer from serious mental health issues, which are the result of stress and pressure. A growing number of individuals around the world, especially the younger generation, work under high stress conditions with a lot of deadlines and tasks requiring a tight amount of time to meet. For example, according to WHO, more than one hundred thousand workers in developed countries like the USA or China face stress and other mental health issues when they are working, compared to the past. Besides that, in the digital era the sense of FOMO, or constantly comparing themselves with others on the internet have become more and more popular, and affects their mental health dramatically, leading to negative thoughts and attitudes among people recently. As a result, the quality of today’s citizens may decrease and become more stressful than ever.
In conclusion, although I completely agree that the life in today’s fast-paced world has improved rapidly compared to the past with the development of technologies and healthcare system, mental health of each individual has become a pressing issue due to rising of the pressure and negative thoughts in people’s lives.
