In this modern era, people migrate to various countries around the world, for better job oppurtinities and living standards. Therefore, many argue that the immigrants should practise the customs and traditions of the new country. I disagree with this argument to a significant extent.
As one settles in a different country, it is necessary to respect and acknowledge the customs and traditions of the respective society. But, it not something that immigrants should be forced to uphold. The major reason is that the practices simply may not be relevant or meaningful to someone from a totally different background. For instance, many traditions across India are centered around the concepts of Hinduism. For a foreigner, who is most probably not a hindu, simply may not find such customs meaningful.
Another issue is that, the traditions and customs of the new place may be conflicting to the ones from where they hail. Therefore, compelling the new residents to involve in such practises can be very uncomfortable for them. The best example for this is, most European traditions involve consumption of alcohol, for instance beer in Germany, Whiskey in Ireland and Vodka in Russia. For an immigrant from South Asia or Middle-East, following this custom may be very challenging.
Even though, this does not mean that people of different backgrounds should totally disregard the customs of their new homes. They should respect and be aware of the practises held there. They should be voluntarily be willing to engage in such activities, without being compelled. This will create a more harmonious society.
In conclusion, being forced to follow such practises may not be meaningful as one may not find it relevant to them or can even be conflicting to their existing believes. One should be acknowledged about the practises of the new country and should be able to involve in them only if they find it comfortable.
