Currently, individuals have less sleep than ever before. This is due to the stress caused by a fast-paced lifestyle. Consequently, the effects of this unhealthy behaviour are having less emotional regulation and being inefficient at tasks throughout the day.
Amongst many, one of the primary reasons for obtaining less hours of sleep is because of having a hectic daily routine which many people have unintentionally adopted in the modern times. Previously, when there was less urbanisation, society used to run in slow and fulfilling work days without feeling pressurised to be productive every second of the day. This changed after industrialisation where economic success is prized over a worker’s well-being. For example, in the corporate world, many office workers deal with unreasonably early deadlines and overwork themselves even during the weekends. This undoubtedly causes intense stress which deteriorates their sleep cycles.
Therefore, the impact of sleep deprivation leads to people having less control over their emotions which makes way for negative feelings to make more appearances such as irritation and anger. This significantly degrades their social life, and overall, creates a chain of wrong decisions which would not have been made otherwise. Additionally, individuals become ineffective workers without adequate rest. Hence, they slip up and make a wide variety of mistakes until they are properly rested.
In conclusion, people in the modern era do not sleep as much as they used to many years ago. This is the result of the hectic lifestyle which induces high levels of stress leading to sleep disruption. This negatively affects the ability to regulate emotions as well as doing work effectively.
