Nowadays, some people say that physical education and competitive sports should be compulsory for all school students by the time they finish middle school. Although there are some risks associated with participating in these sports, I personally agree with it.
Participating all students in PE and competitive sports at school, despite their age, abilities and enthusiasm is unreasonable at first glance. Since young children do not know how to get engaged in sport activities properly, they are more likely to get injuries, making them reluctant to participate in physical activity later in their life. This is because those who are unwilling to take part in mandatory sport classes might wear impractical clothing, such as uniform or even trousers, increasing the risk of breaking a bone or tearing muscles while running and jumping. Thus, it is better to make sport classes optional for all.
Nevertheless, there are many advantages to involving physical education at school, especially for elementary and middle schoolers, making them fit and healthy. Because students spend most of their time at school, to be exact more than half of their day, sitting on a chair too long, they are more likely to develop sedentary lifestyle, leading to bad posture. However, if they participate in sport activities, such as yoga or jogging, between school subjects, they will get fit and healthy.
In addition, competitive sports have a lot of benefits, too. Teamwork, for instance, can be built easily when young children compete with one another in a group, like basketball and football. As long as students can work together in a collaborative activity, they will strength the bonds between them and make friends quickly, which is quite challenging with an ordinary class. Therefore, PE and competitive sports being mandatory has several advantages.
In conclusion, even though there is a risk of getting injury in sport activities for pupils, physical education and competitive sports have many upsides as far as getting fit, healthy and building teamwork are concerned.
