Band 5+: Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no special knowledge of the following topic: News editors decide what to broadcast on television and what to print in newspapers. What factors do you think influence these decisions? Do we become used to bad news? Would it be better if more good news was reported?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, news publishers select what to post on both TV channels and newspapers, and those decisions are justified by several reasons. Moreover, I will discuss the reason of negative news popularity and explain whether there should be posted more positive news.

These days, all journalists are led by the dream of popularity and success, this phenomenon explains their publishment selections, which are targeted to obtaining more views and demand on their portals. Furthermore, it makes publishers to find interesting and catchy cases for their followers, by broadcasting more attractive content, which is mostly negative and could be spread quickly. For instance, cases of crime, scenes of extreme violence or political issues, in reality, people are more appealed by such content, which could be seen in ratings of nowadays news portals.

Turning to the viewer’s point, we are getting used to negative content faster and for a large period of time. I consider, the main reason of that is enshrouded in our interest to react and absorb such news with more pleasure. We as human beings are attracted to discuss shocking news, rather than a good weather report. However, positive cases on channels, objectively, lead to stability and are not addictive. Subsequently, posting more good reports would be extremely useful for viewers. To exemplify, according to the results of a test conducted by New York Times, positive reports help to maintain public’s anxiety.

In conclusion, It is clear that excessive exposure to bad news can have harmful effects on the public. And I believe, that there should be a clear balance between negative and positive content, so both editors and watchers could get a benefit from it.
