On the other hand, limiting scientific research due to ethical concerns may slow down or even set blockades for cutting-edge discoveries. For instance, for most drugs, we conduct experiments on animals. These experiments are to ensure their safety for human use. Restricting these safety measures might delay scientific research. Another example is the use of human embryos; research involving human embryonic stem cells might have the potential to cure diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. On the other hand, ethical restrictions surrounding the use of human embryos have delayed, in some cases, critical research. Similarly, advancements in artificial intelligence may be stunned because of overly cautious ethical regulations, potentially depriving society of life-changing innovations.
Despite these concerns, scientific progress without ethical oversight can lead to dire consequences, which we can find examples of via history. Such as the development of nuclear weaponry, despite being a huge milestone, has led to existential threats. Furthermore, unethical experiments such as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and those on humans in Nazi Germany point out the dangers of disregarding ethical regulations and human rights in the name of scientific advancement. These examples represent the necessity of ethical frameworks to protect society.
Ethical guidelines are crucial to instill trust, which fosters societal acceptance. Not following them may cause beneficial technology to face public backlash. It is important for scientists to adhere to ethical standards, as without them we might end up harming ourselves instead of benefiting.
