There is a standpoint that science and technology advanced research should be carried out by the government rather than by privately owned companies. The aim of this essay is to present some justifications for why I believe that both aspects are of equal importance.
On the one hand, the government’s support for scientific research could be beneficial for several reasons. One of which is that the government’s research endeavors are geared towards meeting public demands, which may involve tackling urgent social problems or overcoming persisting environmental challenges. As a result, governments can guarantee that research is both relevant and impactful, while also producing advantageous results for society with non-profit intentions. Another factor is that governmental regulation can prevent conflicts of interest and ensure that research results are utilized for the greater good instead of personal gain. Specifically, governmental regulation can ensure that research results are disseminated to the public, enabling scientific advancements to be utilized in various sectors such as healthcare, technology, and environmental conservation.
On the other hand, private companies also play a crucial role in driving scientific research forward. Firstly, large-scale research projects are frequently undertaken by companies due to their vast resources and expertise, which may not be readily available to governments. This is due to the fact that having actual insight into the market allows private businesses to develop scientific discoveries, trailblaze unique product features, and implement competitive pricing to take the leading position in the industry. Secondly, the competitive nature of the private sector can ignite innovation and foster the creation of state-of-the-art technologies that are advantageous to society. For instance, drug discovery investments made by pharmaceutical companies can result in quicker introduction of new treatments into the market than research institutions funded by government.
In conclusion, despite some merits for scientific research that could be provided by the government, I personally contend that private corporations also can bring innovations in science.
