People have different views about the restrictions on smartphones and online social platforms for young children. In my perspective, social media or smartphones should be prohibited until children reach an appropriate age.
Firstly, children under the age of 12 should not use smartphones, as it might decrease the valuable time they have after school to have real social interactions or discover new things. For instance, instead of using social media, they should play with their friends, form close-knit relationships within the family, and embark on outdoor activities. Secondly, it is immensely crucial for kids to concentrate on their academic performance. Using smartphones might affect their ability to focus on the learning tasks, which would greatly impact their performance in class. It is hard for kids to fully understand all the risks that they are taking. Finally, social media platforms are not a safe place for young children to join in. While scrolling through social media, kids could easily encounter many inappropriate contents that they do not have a solid ground of knowledge to identify. Therefore, parents must be aware and guide the children in order to protect them until they reach a certain age when they are fully capable of thinking about protecting themselves.
In conclusion, it is undeniably true that social media or smartphones could have a great negative impact on young children’s academic or individual well-being. If they do not have enough abilities to identify inappropriate content online, parents should fully control the use of smartphones and online social media.
