There are almost 20 megacities all around the world. Despite their undeniable contribution to the global economy, megacities have caused ferocious environmental problems. I believe there needs to be a global approach to extract these issues.
Coping with megacities’ environmental problems could not be on a city level. Firstly, megacities affect all regions around the globe; including the most off-the-beaten-track places. For example, small Asian villages are influenced by the trade and current affairs that take place in China’s megacities. Secondly, I strongly believe that city-level solutions are usually vanity projects of politicians to gain popularity among the public. These temporary projects are often forgotton, and do not last enough to minimalize the problems of megacities.
However, global solutions could exponentially result in the elimination of the problems of megacities. Firstly, the environmental consequences of megalopolises are generic and similar globally. These major problems essentially need a united approach, which can only be guaranteed if all countries are dedicated to it, and are supervised by an organization such as the UN. A successful exapmle of a unity against the destructive influence of urban areas was the global ban of burning toxins in the 90s, which helped the Ozon layer heal. Finally, an authentic global solution in response to the lows of megacities will assure us that we will leave our planet safe and sound for the generations to come.
In conclusion, I deeply believe the problems that are risen by megacities should only be dealt with on a global scale.
