Band 5+: Should there be a ban on smoking in public places in an effort to increase quality of life for the public.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Smoking is known to be one of the most discussed and contradictory problems/controversial issues nowadays. The amount of smoking people, including women and teenagers, are dramatically increasing day by day. Even more so, lighting up a cigarette has become fashionable and cool among young people. This situation causes anxiety among the official authorities and makes them look for new instruments to keep the problem under control/in check. In my opinion, prohibiting smoking in public places can improve the quality of public life but it can’t become a panacea.

Nobody can argue that smoking is a bad habit. Firstly, it causes a lot of health problems. The (amount) number of people having asthma, cardiovascular diseases and even lung and throat cancer caused by smoking is growing every day. Smoking among women can become a reason for pathology and innate diseases of new- born babies. This being said, passive smoking is not less harmful. That is why creation of (special) dedicated smoking areas is so important (nowadays) these days.

Secondly, smoking is not attractive or aesthetic. Yellow teeth, bad odor, dry and porous skin – these all factors are real and not just the arguments of parents to keep their children far away from cigarettes. According to the numerous social polls, most of the men do not want their girlfriends and wives to smoke since they are disgusted by this habit.

But in spite of the above (mentioned), it is important to remember about the rights of the smoking people as well. Every person has the right to choose his/her lifestyle and nobody can deprive him of such right. It is also true that smoking is a kind of heavy addiction and it is not that easy to give it up . It takes much time, strength of will/willpower and determination to quit smoking, and even with a doctor’s (assistance) support only 20 per cent of the population can manage it.

To conclude, although it is important to create favorable conditions /it is important that the authorities create favorable conditions to guard non-smokers, especially children and women, from the tobacco smoke it (is not the way out) will not resolve the issue. It is more important to see/approachthis problem from a different perspective, propagandizing a healthy life style free of pernicious habits and addictions, changing the attitude to the smoking and showing the possible consequences for health and life quality(to change the people’s mind).
