Band 7+: Some countries have legal ages at which people can drink. Other countries believe that not having strict laws is a better policy. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Countries play many roles, including those related to the consumption of alcoholic beverages. It is not beneficial for the economy when residents in certain countries are pressured into behaviors that negatively impact their well-being and financial stability. In my view, establishing age restrictions on alcohol consumption can be a positive step. However, without any regulations, the younger generation may lack adequate knowledge about responsible drinking in modern society.

Having an abundance of regulations could hinder the economic progress that governments strive for. Nevertheless, it is essential for every country to implement age restrictions for alcohol consumption to safeguard the health and future of their youth. For example, in 2024, China had one of the highest rates of alcohol consumption among individuals below the average drinking age. This situation arose not solely from regulations but rather from cultural norms where many individuals drink heavily after work. This circumstance contributes to the rising alcohol consumption among younger generations, who often learn these habits from their parents and older relatives.

Interestingly, countries with strict alcohol regulations can also cultivate knowledge in the younger generation on other subjects, leading to significant economic growth. For instance, despite previous concerns, Uzbekistan implemented new regulations regarding alcohol consumption at social gatherings. This cultural shift has resulted in a steady economic growth of about 3% per year, even with a 6% decrease in alcohol consumption.

In conclusion, we must understand our own limits when it comes to alcohol consumption, whether or not there are laws in place, as seen in Uzbekistan. Instead of focusing on drinking, we should prioritize learning and enhancing our knowledge for the sake of our health and overall well-being.
