Museums and art galleries display historical and iconic works of art. Many museums charge visitors for granting entry while some are free. In my opinion, that charging visitors for entrance derives more benefits than drawbacks because with out it, many museums would not be able to protect their collections well.
Firstly, one major advantage of charging an entry fee to a museum is that the money could be utilised to maintain and develop the museum. Not all museums are funded by the government and sometimes museum’s fund is not enough to cover all the costs it requires. Specifically, museums need money to pay for maintenance, repairs and upgrades as well as staff salaries. Futhermore, it can enhance the overall visitor experience by providing the best possible facilities and space. The application of entrance fees makes the museum is not too crowded, which keeps the museum’s environment conducive for people who want to study and learn about the works contained in the museum. Simultaneously, this revenue allows the museum to continuously upgrade and diversify its exhibits and maintain its richness, expanding faster to attract more people.
On the other hand, charging fees also has the disadvantage of reducing the number of visitors. When an entrance fee is imposed, it may discourage people with financial constraints from visiting. For example, families on a tight budget or students with limited resources may have difficulty purchasing museum tickets. In addition, some people think that the museum only has a few works and they do not want to spend money to enter.
In conclusion, although museum admission fees may limit access for some individuals, the benefits of doing so are in generating revenue to enhance the visitor experience and invest in the collections. The museum’s benefits will outweigh the disadvantages.
