Online shopping, a modern trend that has been booming throughout recent years due to lockdown from the spread of the coronavirus. Captivating the eyes of multiple customers of varying ages and generations due to their convenience, speed, and cost efficiency. But this revolution could cause economical breakdowns for brick-and-mortar businesses. Which can dictate and seal the future of shopping forever.
As I’ve mentioned before, online retail has become one of the most popular methods of purchase due to several reasons: the outbreak of the disease causing most individuals the inability to leave the house due to lockdown, and the rise of work-at-home jobs. Due to the uprising of online marketing, consumers have saved tremendous amounts of time wasted for shopping, and saved hundreds of dollars by reducing gas consumption due to the decreased need for going outside. Consequently, major businesses started applying this strategy to gain the upper hand in the market to acquire more value, shares, and assets. Thus, dominating competitors that refuse to trade online. However, it does strike a few questions among citizens. How will retailers that lack resources for online shopping continue their businesses? As tens of thousands of businesses are closing down in recent years.
It is affirmative that the recent shift in retail preference has suffered a dramatic change. But despite having severe disadvantages in the digital market, some brick-and-mortar stores still survive. Few reasons have emerged from the economical quagmire that has been raging for years. Studies have shown psychological behavior of consumers and have stated that some prefer to examine the product before purchasing them, such as designer bags, shoes, telephones, IT materials, and gadgets. Once those products are up to standards, it gives customers confidence and less uncertainty for the product. Furthermore, recent articles and television news have also announced multiple online scams and reports of low performing produce which further implements negative bias and disdain towards online shopping for several customers. Which might be the reason why these stores still are able to grow and develop in these recent days.
The future of the economy is uncertain as it not only depends on the topic we’ve been given today; online shopping, but other major aspects such as political disputes, investments from worldwide conglomerates, and natural phenomena. One certain thing is that online shopping may be a huge aspect of the economy in the future as it is still undergoing development and has many issues as mentioned. But, I am positive that these issues and failures are only a stepping stone that will dictate the future of shopping.
