Band 8+: Some people beileve that young people should be punished the same way as adutls. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some individuals argue that young offenders who commit grave crimes should be treated equally under the law as adults. I absolutely disagree with this opinion, as adolescents are not fully mature and are more capable of rehabilitation.

Firstly, minor offenders should not be punished in the same way as adults because their mental development is still incomplete. According to scientific research, adolescents often act impulsively and do not fully understand the consequences of their actions. At a young age, emotions usually control behavior more than logic. For example, a teenager may commit a violent crime under peer pressure or strong emotions without realizing the lifelong impact of such behavior. If these young people receive the same punishment as adults, it may destroy their future rather than help them improve.

Secondly, treating young offenders as adults could reduce their chances of returning to normal life through rehabilitation. Harsh punishment often exposes minors to hardened criminals, which can worsen their behavior instead of correcting it. In prison environments, young people may learn more criminal habits rather than positive values. In contrast, rehabilitation programs help minors improve discipline and understand the difference between right and wrong. Moreover, these programs play an important role in helping young people return to society and avoid committing crimes again.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that adolescents should be sent to rehabilitation programs rather than placed in severe conditions designed for adults. Due to their psychological immaturity and higher potential for change, a corrective and educational approach is more effective for young offenders.
