Currently, the idea of taking a year out between school and university is still open to debate. There are valid arguments on both sides, which I will elaborate on in this essay.
Some arguments in favor of taking a gap year before entering the university are because of the desire for acquisition of new skills and the relaxation. To begin with, the previous accumulation of social skills, such as communication skills and teamwork, through practical experiences, are of great benefits to adapting to alterations in the university. Additionally, by immersing themselves in hobbies or interests, such as traveling and drawing, students can take advantage of a year to get relaxed, building a refreshing spirit for university life.
Conversely, those who express their disapproval of taking a year out think that this can interrupt students from studying, and that this poses challenges to them. It is obvious that following an academic path is a long journey requiring continual efforts; therefore, taking a gap year would have an adverse impact on students’ academic performance when they continue their studying in the university a year later. In addition, lack of professional knowledge and hands – on experience especially makes it difficult for students who want to take a gap year to collect experiences by finding a job or traveling.
Overall, in my opinion, a gap year after school can expose students to novel experiences, but it brings more challenges to them. However, as long as people are reassured that their efficiency in studying will not be affected, taking a year out is a good idea.
