Band 9: Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes, entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Nowadays, there is ongoing debate about whether parents should allow their children to make their own choices regarding essential aspects of life such as food, clothing, and entertainment. While fostering independence in children could contribute to a more self-sufficient society, I believe that a complete lack of parental control over children’s decisions could lead to unhealthy choices and selfish behavior. Therefore, a balanced approach to upbringing should be considered.

On the one hand, when young individuals are given full control over their choices, it teaches them independence. This autonomy allows children to express themselves and develop decision-making skills, but it also comes with the responsibility of facing the consequences of their actions. For instance, a child who chooses to wear inappropriate clothing to school, such as jeans and a sweatshirt, might face suspension, negatively impacting their academic performance. Additionally, parents might decide to withhold pocket money after such an incident, prompting the child to think carefully before making future decisions. Such experiences, though sometimes involving mistakes, can significantly contribute to a child’s growth and self-reliance.

On the other hand, if children focus primarily on their own needs, they may grow into selfish adults. While self-sufficiency is important, it is equally crucial to consider the needs and feelings of others. For example, when organizing a birthday party, a child should take into account their guests’ preferences regarding food and entertainment, rather than only including what they enjoy. Some guests might have food allergies or might not be able to participate in certain games, leading to an unenjoyable experience for them. Such actions, though seemingly minor, can result in strained relationships and social difficulties.

In conclusion, allowing children to make their own choices can teach them independence and responsibility, but it can also negatively impact their relationships with peers and family if they become too self-focused. In my opinion, excessive freedom in decision-making can lead to poor choices; therefore, moderation and balanced guidance from parents are essential.
