Band 9: Some people believe that children should be given homework every day, while others think that it is unnecessary. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Whether children should be assigned homework on a daily basis has become a topic of much debate. While some people argue that homework is essential for reinforcing classroom learning, others believe that it puts unnecessary pressure on students and deprives them of a well-rounded development. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe homework should be given, but in moderation.

Supporters of daily homework claim that it plays a vital role in promoting independent learning and improving academic performance. When children are required to complete tasks at home without the supervision of teachers, they are encouraged to think critically and apply what they have learned in school. This fosters an independent study habit, which is essential for their future, especially when they have to work alone as adults. Furthermore, homework serves as a valuable opportunity for practice and revision. Doing exercises repeatedly helps students retain knowledge more effectively and boosts their confidence before exams. Consequently, it can reduce exam-related stress and help them perform better in tests.

On the other hand, critics argue that giving homework every day can be detrimental to children’s well-being. Many students already struggle with a heavy workload and frequent exams at school. Adding daily homework to this burden often forces them to sacrifice sleep to meet academic expectations, which may result in exhaustion and a loss of interest in studying. Over time, this stress can even lead to serious mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. Additionally, focusing too much on academic work limits children’s opportunities to develop essential life skills. Without enough time for leisure or extracurricular activities like sports, music, or social interaction, students may lack important soft skills such as communication and problem-solving. In the long term, this imbalance between study and personal growth could hinder their ability to adapt and succeed in real-world environments.

In conclusion, although daily homework can enhance learning and promote independence, it also has the potential to negatively affect students’ physical and mental health, as well as their personal development. Therefore, I believe that homework should still be assigned, but in a more balanced way that allows children to enjoy other aspects of life beyond academics.
