Band 8+: Some people believe that children should focus on academics only, while others think extracurricular activities are equally important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In modern education, there is an ongoing debate whether students should focus solely on the academic curriculum or give equal importance to extracurricular activities. While some people argue that academic study is the main purpose of schooling, others believe that non-academic pursuits play an equally vital role in students’ development. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own view.

On the one hand, those who prioritise academic subjects argue that they are essential for shaping students’ future careers. Students who choose subjects like mathematics, science, and languages provide the foundational knowledge required for higher education and professional success. In a highly competitive job market, academic achievement is often the key factor that determines access to prestigious universities and high-paying jobs. For example, those students who have exceptional grades are often offered full-bright scholarships to the US, where they can study at their dream colleges. Therefore, academic excellence plays a major role in shaping students’ futures.

On the other hand, supporters of extracurricular activities claim that education is not limited to textbooks and examinations. Activities such as sports, music, debate, and volunteering help students develop important life skills, such as teamwork, leadership, time management, and communication. They open doors for students to explore their inner talents. These skills are highly valued in the real world and cannot be learned through traditional classroom methods. For instance, students who are part of the student council are those selected on the basis of both their academic excellence and extracurricular performance. Furthermore, extracurricular involvement can reduce stress and improve students’ mental well-being, making them more motivated to do better at studies.

In my opinion, both academic subjects and extracurricular activities are important, and a balanced approach is necessary. While academic knowledge forms the base for future endeavours, extracurricular activities contribute to the holistic development of students. Therefore, schools should focus on designing a curriculum that allows students to excel academically as well as providing opportunities for non-academic pursuits.

In conclusion, although academic subjects are crucial for career development, extracurricular activities play a pivotal role in shaping all-round individuals. A combination of both is the most effective method to prepare students to face the challenges of the future.
