A group of people assume consumerism has beneficial effects on economic growth, I disagree with this because everything need to be on balance and if it has positive impact economically then there may be more issues on other stuffs, whereas; the others believe it can harm environment and cause social problems such as jealousy between friends or co-workers.
Most advertisements show off the stuffs more attractive than what it is, which leads to attract more consumers. It increases consumerism in a harmful way because of the slangs, models and the method of advertising people try to be as perfect as what they can see on social media, to add more; most business man make benefits of it. As an example, most teenagers have rare mindsets in comparison to the adults, So business owners make them a target to command attention with advertisements in different social medias like instagram.
On the other hand, others believe that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits, In other words, consumerism impacts on peoples brain and causes social issues such as always desire to buy trend stuffs and maybe new brand mobile phone or any technology devices. So, it is harmful for the environment and society. As an example, most of people spend their savings to buy a higher model of their phone just because it is newly released to just show off. Many of them go camping and hicking to post a story without even protecting the nature and the wildlife.
In general, consumerism brings pros and cons for society, environment, and economic. If individuals consume in order to provide their needs it is fine but whenever something is bought in order to show off or having a newer device it causes damages for mindsets then for the nature. It increses economic growth for businesses not for ordinary people.
