It is argued that governments should spend money on public transportation instead of expansion of roads and highways. In my opinion, governments firstly should focus on the public transportation because of the benefits it brings to citizens. These benefits are separated into environmental benefits and traffic congestions.
To begin with, public transportation is beneficial for environment since using public transportation improve air quality and reduce carbon footprint. If you use motor vehicles or private cars, your foodprint will increase due to these vehicles’ emission gases. To give an example, all outdoor activities were banned in pandemic. Therefore, people stayed at home, and their foodprint reduced.
In addition, public transportation can reduce traffic congestions in urban areas. Crowded cities have traffic issues, so that who live in a crowded city should prefer public transportation for a long distance. When office hours finish, traffic jam exists so that people can use public transportation in these rush hours. For example, my office hours finish at 5 o’clock. Sometimes my work finishes early and I go home at 3 o’clock. During 5 o’clock, traffic congestion is a lot and my travel lasts 1 hour. However, when I leave the office early, this travel reduces half an hour.
To sum up, In my opinion public transportation should be improved by the governments by spending more money for it than for the improvements of roads and highways. This investment will be useful for the environment. Additionally, a better transportation system will decrease the traffic jam.
