Governments across the world have shown strong commitments to make education accessible for all. Despite its importance to the society, some people believe in making it free at all levels while others argue for it, to be delivered at a certain cost. In this essay I will explore both sides of the argument prior to my argument why I believe education should not be free at all levels.
Access to education is a basic human right. Although, certain costs are involved in education people should not be restricted from such opportunities due to their incapability to pay for it. As part of their duty, governments should subsidize these costs of education using tax payers money. This is important because making education free will increase its accessibility which to crete an elite society in sectors that can build the overall nations’ well being.
However, making education comes with a huge cost. Eventhough, free access to education increses accesbility, it can hightly compromise the quality. Education requires continued research and expermentation which comes at a higher cost. Without these two elements ensuring a quality education is impossible, specially at university levels. Therfore, this can lead to the delivery of poor quality education.
In my opinion education at the primary and secondary level should be free. This enables to ensure a country’s literacy level at a higher rate to impact the nation’s over all wellbeing. However, ensuring quality of education specially at higher levels, like the university and colleges, requires a continued expense which students actually need to pay for. Getting instructors with good expereince for example, requires paying good salary above the market price. Such institutions can only be able to cover such expenses through tution fees students pay that can also allow them to be a sulf sustaining .
In general, the role of edcuation in a country’s wealth is a known factor. However, whether to make it free or paid at is a continued debate. Building a well educated society through accessible and quality education is important, but that definitely comes with a certain price which needs to be covered by the community.
