It is prevalent that many individuals believe that working as long as possible is beneficial. From my perspective, I firmly disagree with this school of thought as not only may it be challenging for these people to maintain their performance, but working in old age can also be detrimental to employees’ health
The ageing process may affect negatively these individuals’ performance. This can be observed in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest footballers in the world. Specifically, even though this top-tier star is still playing and scoring a plethora of goals, it is undeniable that his performance is not as good as that of previous him. To explain, being older has effects on Ronaldo’s body, which have been degrading his stamina as well as his endurance, not allowing this footballer to maintain his world-class performance. One may argue that in some other fields like business, people may obtain numerous experiences throughout the years, so older employees can work better in comparison with those who do not have enough experience. Nevertheless, the degradation of mental ability occurring in the ageing process may hinder these employees from acquiring new knowledge. Therefore, this advantage might be lost without the application of modern knowledge in today’s fast-paced world.
Moreover, another negative ramification of working as long as possible is related to the detriment of these workers’ health. Indeed, as mentioned before, the ageing process degrades the operation of individuals’ bodies, so these people may not meet their jobs’ requirements. In the scenario that they exert themselves, these individuals may encounter some injuries, which can take a longer time to recover due to the degradation caused by the ageing process. For example, a porter may be prone to have some physical injuries, while an executive in a conglomerate may encounter some stress, which can possibly lead to mental injuries.
In conclusion, despite the advantage of working as long as possible relating to experience, I oppose this idea. This is because the ageing process may negatively affect not only their performance but also their health.
