For an overall growth of a child, involvement of parents is very necessary in their life. While some parents pay a minimal attention to their kids, whereas others are obsessed and put a lot of stress to them to achieve certain things. Both of these situations can negatively impact children. This essay will express the reasons for pressure and discuss what should be ideal parental roles.
There are two predominant reasons of putting excess pressure on children. First reason is that, parents treat them as a status symbol or an asset which can make them feel proud. Qualifying difficult exams or getting high grades can provide an opportunity to show off or get respect from different people in society. Having a brilliant or academically acclaimed child is seen as a trophy by many parents so they continue to put pressure to achieve great result without considering child’s area of interest or mental health. In addition to that, many parents might have some unfulfilled dreams so they will pressurize their child to fulfil those dreams. In this way, they might have a feeling of accomplishment, if their child achieves those incomplete desires. Though parents want to give certain facilities to their kids which they couldn’t get or afford, but this can affect the growth of children as they might lose their own identity to fulfil the expectations and dreams of their parents.
In my point of view, the role of a parent should be neutral, they should neither be completely unaware nor put unnecessary burden over their child. They should provide a proper and protective environment to kids which can allow to make mistakes as they will know and understand things better if they learnt by doing themselves. All decisions should be made and implemented by a student himself rather than demanded to achieve other’s dreams. Children should be allowed to explore different areas and subjects to know what make them happy and feel encouraged to follow their dream to perform better and be satisfied. Subsequently, parents should focus on overall growth of a child by making him a good human and encourage them to develop life skills such as communication rather than just forcing to cater subject knowledge or achieving good grades. It can help a child to compete in real world and live life better. In a longer run, getting just good marks doesn’t matter if one is not able to communicate with others.
In conclusion, parents pressurize their child due to social competition and to fulfil their incomplete dreams. However, their role should be to provide a healthy environment and develop a child holistically, rather than just focusing on marks.
