Band 7+: Some children receive almost no encouragement from their parents regarding their performance at school, while other children receive too much pressure from their over enthusiastic parents which can have a negative impact on the child. Why do you think some parents put too much pressure on their children to perform well at school? What do you think the role of a parent should be in their child's education?

In many countries, parents play an active role in their children’s education. While some provide healthy encouragement, others place excessive pressure on their children to achieve high academic results, which can be harmful. This issue raises questions about why some parents push their children too hard at school and what role parents should play in the learning process.

One of the main reasons why some parents put too much pressure on their children is the tendency to project their unfulfilled ambitions onto them.Parents who were unable to achieve their goals may expect their children to succeed where they did not. In addition, constant comparison with other children can lead parents to believe that high grades are the only measure of success. Fear of an uncertain future also plays a role, as many parents are convinced that strong academic performance guarantees a stable and wealthy life. As a result, they may not notice the emotional consequences of excessive expectations.

However, the role of a parent in a child’s education should be based on support rather than control. Parents should encourage effort and progress instead of focusing only on results. Creating a safe and motivating environment allows children to develop confidence and a genuine interest in learning. It is also important for parents to recognize individual strengths and accept that success can take many different forms, not only academic achievement.

To sum it up, a parent’s participation is definitely needed, but it can be observed that most of the times the excessive parental pressure arises because of the parent’s fear and the social expectations. Balanced approach that combines guidance, understanding and emotional support is far more effective in helping children reach their full potential.
