Some students opt for a break during their academics to work or backpack around the world. While others believe in completing their enrolled course without a gap. According to me, a break year hampers the flow one has established throughout their academics.
The most obvious benefit is to have some experience before entering the corporate environment to ensure they are prepared for work. But a drop year to attain experience isn’t a feasible solution, as one can apply for internships while studying to get relevant work experience. Besides that, some take breaks to go sightseeing and explore the world by traveling to different countries and learning about different cultures. However, this can be done even after completion of academics and is not time-bound. Another point in favor concerns the pent-up stress in the previous year; this could be the reason for a drop, but this can be negated by using more effective methods like yoga or effective time management.
Conversely, completing one’s academics in one stretch will help maintain the knowledge that would otherwise be lost over a gap year. . This helps a student be fresh and remember all that he/she has learned. Another drawback is that a person taking a gap year could lose interest in their course and wind up not completing it. . There have been many cases where students take leave from university and end up abandoning their course. With each gap year, a student wastes years that cannot be returned to them.
After careful consideration of weighing the pros and the cons, I contend that the drawbacks significantly overshadow the benefits.
