Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 8+: Some people believe that living in big cities is becoming more difficult. Others believe that it is getting easier. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a debate about whether the urban lifestyle is getting more challenging. Some major advantages of living in metropolises are better facilities and more job opportunities. Meanwhile, some undeniable disadvantages would be overpopulation and pollution.

On the one hand, there are some benefits to being a city dweller. First of all, amenities and basic infrastructures are more developed than in rural areas. Specifically, there are more varied means of transportation and more prestigious schools and universities. From my experience, I have some relatives who live in the countryside and have to commute by private cars only. Some of my cousins have to move to my city for more advanced education. Moreover, there is no denying that there are more desirable employment prospects in cosmopolitan areas. That is because more foreign firms and corporations invest more in developed parts of a country, so naturally there are a wider array of high-paying jobs in those parts. To illustrate, my aunt was an accountant and did not earn much when she was in her hometown, but after she had moved to the capital city, she has been receiving a higher-than-average amount of income.

On the other hand, there are also some drawbacks to living in large cities. One of the main downsides is population explosion. To elaborate, most major urban areas have become densely populated as a direct result of the government encouraging people to have more children and prioritizing bigger cities for more development. Consequently, there are more congestion for commuters and more competition for job seekers. Another pitfall is unclean air. Because of heavy traffic jams, car exhausts release toxic gasses such as carbon dioxide and cause high levels of pollution over urban areas. As a result, city residents are more likely to suffer from respiratory illnesses and diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, to name a few.

In conclusion, there are more amenities and job prospects in metropolises, which lead to overall better living standards. At the same time, overpopulation and pollution can be detrimental to residents.
