In our globalized world, the importance of subjects in school divides people’s opinions. There is a discussion about whether students should choose their own subjects at school or follow a fixed curriculum. Both sides have good reasons, and I will discuss them below.
On the one hand, some people think students should be allowed to choose their subjects. The main reason is that it can make students more interested in learning. When they study what they like, they will work harder and feel happier. For example, if a student loves art, letting them take more art classes will help them develop their talent. Also, choosing subjects can help them plan for their future jobs earlier.
On the other hand, others believe a set curriculum is better. A fixed curriculum makes sure every students learn important basic knowledge, like math and science. If students only choose easy or fun subjects, they might miss some key skills they need later in life. Also, a standard curriculum is fair for everyone. All students learn the same things, and teachers can plan their lessons easily.
In my opinion, I think we need a balance. Young students should follow a set curriculum to build a good foundation. But when they get older, like in high school, they should have some choices. This way, they can learn basic things and also follow their interests.
