The issue of allocating government budgets for the cultural sector has attracted great public attention and remains a topic of continuous debate. While I acknowledge the validity of prioritizing essential services like healthcare and education, I am of the view that supporting the arts is equally important and by no means a waste of public money.
On the one hand, there are certain valid reasons why the national budget should be heavily concentrated on essential public services. To begin with, education is the foundation of human resource development since children are the future of a country. If the education system is poor, the younger generation will lack the knowledge needed to develop themselves and their nation. Besides, healthcare services ensure human survival and basic health. If there is a lack of medical funding, people’s lives will become extremely difficult, and many could pass away due to a shortage of medicines and adequate treatment conditions. Therefore, prioritizing these two fields in budget planning is completely logical and justifiable.
On the other hand, I am more convinced that supporting the arts plays a key role in society. The foremost argument to justify my stand is that art is not only for entertainment but also for cultural and historical preservation. This is because many paintings or artifacts recreate past historical events, which ultimately helps the younger generation remember their roots. Added to this is the fact that the art sector brings important economic value through tourism. A prime example of this is that numerous art exhibitions attract a wide range of foreign visitors, generating revenue and job opportunities for local people. Therefore, investing in the arts yields significant economic and social benefits.
In conclusion, although healthcare and education undeniably require substantial financial support, I firmly believe that public expenditure on the arts is essential for preserving cultural heritage and driving economic growth. It is recommended that governments maintain a balanced budget strategy to ensure both social welfare and cultural prosperity.
