More and more people consider that the government should cover all the course fees for students willing to enroll in a university. However, I strongly disagree with this point, as it can cause massive issues for the country’s economy and students’ achievements.
The primary reason is that the student population will increase in every university, which would place a heavy financial burden on the government. Consequently, the budget may become insufficient for other essential public services, such as healthcare and infrastructure, potentially weakening the national economy.
An additional reason for my stance is that students are likely to take education for granted if they do not have to pay for their studies. For example, an education survey reported that student performance tends to be lower in universities that offer free tuition compared to those where students contribute financially. This suggests that students may become less responsible and lack motivation when they are not financially invested in their education.
In conclusion, although covering all university fees might seem supportive, it could put pressure on the national economy and reduce students’ academic motivation. Therefore, I believe higher education should not be completely free, and some level of student contribution is necessary.
