It is often argued that tertiary education should focus on preparing students for job. Others, however, believe that the main purpose of university education is to develop knowledge and critical thinking. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why people support the view that universities should focus on student’s future and help them to live adult life. One main reason is that universities can equip students with practical skills required in the workplace. By gaining hands-on experience during their education, graduates may reciece some useful traits. This means that in future job they will find it much easier to adapt to professional environments. In addition, this type of studies will economy a lot of time for future workers, which further strengthens this viewpoint.
On the other hand, many people argue that tertiary education should develop students’ knowledge and critical thinking, which will be much better than preparing them for employment. This view is based on the belief that universities is that place where students go to recieve new knowledges. As a result, graduates will be more intelligent, however they could not anticipate for challenges. In addition, they may not meet employers’ expectations. From my point of view, it is better to prepare students for work, than develop their knowledge and critical thinking.
In conclusion, altough both views have their own metris, I believe that in the future tertiary edcuation will prepare graduates for their adult life. Overall, this approach is more beneficial in the long term.
