Some believe that higher education should put the focus on practicing varied proficiencies in tasks for work. Others believe that students should focus solely on the betterment of their knowledge and nothing else. I believe that a focus on a combination of the two would reach the optimal outcome.
The belief that the most important part of university education should be skills could be based on the requirements of certain jobs. For example, the mastery of the scientific methodology might be required for any job that requires its employee to research certain topics.Furthermore, almost all jobs require a certain amount of proficiency in a variety of soft skills, such as communication capabilities and the ability to cooperate with strangers.
On the other hand, some people might believe that schools should prioritize subject knowledge only. Backing the statement up with arguments such as the requirement of diplomas and certificates for future employment, which places more weight on studying compared with cultivating skills. As the knowledge is what will help students the most when they attempt to pass the requirements.
Even with the two opinion mentioned above, I believe that there is a middle ground between the two. Which is a combination of skill and knowledge based learning, this method should combine the benefits of both learning soft skills and bettering the student’s academics. Whilst focusing only on one would make a student lack in other departments.
In conclusion, neither pushing students to solely practice different abilities nor funneling all of a student’s time into subject study is the optimal choice, rather a mix of both methods is the best for students studying in university.
